| (b.1948) A classically trained dancer from the age of 14, Mugler founded his own fashion design company, Société Thierry Mugler, in 1974. He designed men’s and women’s ready-to-wear clothing. The love of performance is a recurring theme in his work. Typical of his designs is their structured elegance and accentuated shoulders.
Mugler created very identifiable style. He designed a new feminine silhouette where shapes and curves are accentuated by the strictness of the cut. For men, Mugler produced a very clear-cut, precise and structured image with a shouldered, slender cut for a classic silhouette.
In 1978 he opened his first boutique in Paris at 10, Place des Victoires. In 1983, he opened his first factory. The first exclusive boutiques abroad were opened in 1983 and 1986 in Brussels and Geneva. On the 10th anniversary of the creation of his fashion house, the Autumn/Winter 1984-85 collection was presented in a mega-show before 6,000 people at the Zenith in Paris. It was the first fashion show in France ever opened to the general public.
Thierry Mugler’s career also extends to staging scores of spectacular events, including those at the Zénith, the Budo Kan, Cirque d’Hiver, and recently, the Cirque du Soleil. His role has been director, creator, and costume designer. Thierry Mugler is also the author of short films, advertising films, photography works, and music videos.
